This fresh and modern approach to Pilates is the brainchild of instructor Teejay Sogunro whose knowledge, expertise and personal experience is unique. Teejay has no time for rigid interpretations of Pilates exercises that are clinically inappropriate, his passion is to help the individual, whether their problems have roots in hobbies (gardening, sports etc), pre/post pregnancy, office work or professional sport. Even if the patient is not aware of what is causing the pain, Teejay and his team are there to help.

"Part of what we do is reassure people and let them know we are going to work to their level. We take them through and build up their confidence."

While Teejay and his team are committed to providing a full body conditioning programme for clients, their priority is always to find the right exercises for each individual's needs. In doing so they apply up-to-date scientific evidence to the Pilates Method together with other forms of rehab or performance conditioning exercises. Nothing is more important to Teejay than working out the best method for each client.

Teejay says: "I know this as a fact from my own personal experiences. When I first came across Pilates as a client in my early days, Pilates instructors would advise me during both matwork and equipment sessions that if any of the Pilates exercises begin to cause pain, then stop. The problem with this form of monitoring is that when soft tissues are aggravated or injured, it can take up to 48 hours before the pain actually presents.

I spent many months suffering agonising back pain after doing Pilates sessions with well-intentioned Pilates instructors who just did not understand the nature of my back problem, and as a result, put me through the most inappropriate Pilates routines that literally immobilised me for days and actually worsened my condition.

So if your Pilates instructor doesn't understand the clinical nature of a prolapsed disc, sciatica or facet joint syndrome, or how to diagnose a ruptured tendon, ligament or muscle, then how on planet earth is he or she going to know which Pilates exercises would aggravate or worsen your condition?

Also be aware that matwork exercises taught in fitness centres, group reformer classes and by instructors of rigid unmodified Classical Pilates can be extremely traumatic to the lower back, especially if you already have back pain or other musculoskeletal problems.

Pilates is not a magical form of exercise that cures all problems. However the appropriate exercises for your condition can produce profound and enduring results.

At applied pilates we have the knowledge to ensure we are part of the solution to your problem, not part of your problem."

....from knowledge comes solutions.

"Inappropriate Pilates exercises can be severely detrimental to your condition"
