The Sogunro Practice - Applied Pilates Studio in St Albans

About Applied Pilates

At the Sogunro Practice we have no time for rigid interpretations of pilates exercises that are clinically inappropriate; our expertise enables us to apply the right exercises for each individual. To do so we apply up-to-date scientific evidence to the pilates method, together with other forms of rehab or performance conditioning exercises. The efficacy of the Applied Pilates approach is in the ability to choose the appropriate exercises and, then adapt and modify the exercises to meet the specific needs of each client.

The chances are that if you have a musculoskeletal issue and you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve been advised by your doctor or physio to “do pilates”. But did they advise which kind of pilates?

Did you know that doing the wrong pilates exercises can actually make your condition worse? For example if you have a prolapsed disc, more than half of the standard pilates exercises will almost certainly worsen your symptoms and should be excluded from your routine. But choosing the correct exercises will train you how to manage your symptoms and accelerate your recovery. And that’s precisely why we’re different – we know which exercises are the right ones to treat or manage your condition and which ones must be avoided.

So it’s essential that your pilates treatment is adapted specifically for you by a practitioner who firstly understands the nature of your musculoskeletal condition, and who can then select and apply the correct exercises that will aid recovery or that will help you to manage your condition.

That’s why we have developed our innovative and unique clinically-modified form of exercise that is tailored for you and designed to address your specific issues. It’s not mat-work. You’ll learn how to use our specialist equipment which provides support and stability as you carry out the exercises, whether you’re the 69 year old who’s just had a hip replacement, or the 27 year old training for the next triathlon.

Applied Pilates incorporates up to date principles of spinal/joint rehabilitation and exercise science. It offers preparatory exercises and modifications to cater for different abilities, conditions and levels of fitness, and is one of the safest and most effective pilates-based exercise methods.

Before starting any exercise with us you will be individually assessed so that we can complete a postural, bio-mechanical and movement assessment. You will be introduced to our principles for safe and effective exercise, and your personal exercise programme, specific to your needs will be developed. We keep records of the exercise routine that we prescribe for you and of the adjustments that we make as you progress over a series of sessions.

Our focus is never on a group workout – you won’t find any choreographed classes or group fitness routines here. This is all about the right exercises for each individual and we prioritise bio-mechanical stability over variety. So whether you choose a one to one or a semi-private session, you will always maintain your own individual programme, working at your own pace towards your own objectives.

We will also work with your Consultant, Physiotherapist, Osteopath to complement and progress your rehabilitation process.

Based in London Colney, St Albans we work with a wide range of clients in the local area.
